A great offering to God: A broken spirit (Psalm 51:17)
Psalm 51:17: "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise".
God, who does not despise the contrite heart and who welcomes the poor in spirit into His kingdom (Matthew 5:3), inspired King David, the author of the 51st psalm to remind us what He desires from us daily.
David, a man after Gods own heart, knows exactly what God desires from us after we sin. He doesn’t desire our money, labor or a certain emotion to be given just right. Instead, God desires a heart that sees its own cracks and understands how broken and rebellious it inherently is.
A confession of our brokenness and desperate need of God's mercy before Him will always heal us spiritually.
Sin destroyed this world, it caused a toxic infection to be upon all creatures. It causes humans to constantly stumble daily in anger, jealousy, pride etc.. which the devil uses to shame us. But thankfully God heals us from these internal wounds. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice is strong enough to take on your sin. It has to be, what a waste it would be, if Gods own death on a cross couldn’t constantly wash our sins away.
It can though, and we know this because it’s what God intended from the beginning, what God prophecies through men must come true. He is faithful.
The faithful Savior and King of Kings came to heal the broken-hearted.
He reshapes the prideful heart and jealous mindset filled with mockery of others to be a new spirit that is self-sacrificing for Gods glory and gentle to the most despicable enemies. The Christian's union with Christ also renews the mind to see God's goodness and earnestly seek it.
God sealed our salvation by his atonement for our sins. He died on Calvary so that his mercies would be new daily. This great gift of salvation filled with grace and peace will always flow down with the greatest joys a person can have: Gods stirring of our soul for Him, which helps us fully understand the awesomeness of the gospel to where we begin to see how good God is (Psalm 34:8).
Maybe this week or for a while, you have felt “poor in spirit”.
Has the world drained you of any spiritual thought? Has life felt dissatisfying because of failures? Has it been so exhausting that you barely open up the Bible weekly? Have you forgotten to speak to God? Are the worries of today to heavy to cast?
Have you been reminded of your past? your shame and discomforts?
Follower of Christ, remind yourself of how God now looks at you.
He sees righteousness and obedience that you could never obtain yourself (2 Corinthians 5:21). He see's His son dead on the tree, nailing all the sins of your past, present and future to the cross (Colossians 2:14).
He does not remember your sins anymore (Hebrews 10: 17), Christ's sacrifice and triumph over death is all He sees. This is the beauty of the good news that we share to fellow sinners.
Questions to consider:
"Am I in union with God? Or am I separated from Him?"
"Do I see my sin? or does pride and shame block me?"
"Have I truly grasped the weight of Jesus's representation of me before God in heaven?"
If you have not, consider offering God your broken spirit today. He can carry your burden of sin (Psalm 68:19)!
